Looking after yourself is crucial to having a good quality of life, regardless of where you are in the world. Regular balanced meals will fuel you and provide essential nutrients. Exercise, meanwhile, reduces blood pressure and cholesterol levels, strengthens your immune system, and reduces the risk of heart disease.
You’ll have more energy
Whether you’ll be hiking to a famous landmark or going on an adrenaline-fuelled mountain biking trip, you’ll get more out of your travels the more energy you have. Energy levels improve dramatically if you eat regularly and try to keep fit. Luckily, exploring a new place often involves lots of walking and climbing, so you’ll be reaping the benefits and getting your sightseeing done at the same time.
Exercise is a natural mood-booster
Every time you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins trigger a feeling of positivity, also known as a natural high, which is why people always feel better post-workout.
Overeating will make you feel sluggish
It’s fun to try new, unusual foods, but don’t overdo it. Overeating can make you feel lethargic because your body has to focus more on digesting the food, and you’ll be less likely to want to go out and explore. Over time you’ll build up resistance to the hormone leptin, which tells you you’re full, making it easier for you to eat too much and gain weight.
You’ll get a better night’s sleep
Sleep can help with all kinds of things — it improves your mood, memory, and concentration, reduces inflammation, and helps you maintain a healthy weight. Aim for 7-8 hours a night, depending on what your body needs, and think of it as giving a boost to all your hard work.
It’ll be easier to get back into a routine once you get home
It can be difficult to come back down to earth after an amazing time away, but sticking to a routine means it won’t be quite so much of a shock. You’ll be back to normal and planning your next trip before you know it!
